The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
